PIM: Challenges and Tensions in Materials Design for English for Academic Purposes

1st November 2024 @ 9:30am - 4:30pm

£100.00 – £150.00

The University of Portsmouth invites you to attend our November 2024 PIM that will focus on the  Challenges and Tensions in Materials Design for English for Academic Purposes. This PIM will be held on our university campus in the beautiful south, in the historic seaside city of Portsmouth.

At our PIM we will look to explore the challenges and tensions faced by practitioners  in designing effective and appropriate materials for English for Academic Purposes programmes. Challenges faced by materials designers include the tension between disciplinary authenticity of the content and accessibility not only to students, but also to tutors, some of whom may have to ‘switch gears’ from general EFL to EAP in a short period of time. Resolving tensions such as these requires a fine balance and careful decision making.

Themes of concern to EAP professionals that could be addressed at the meeting may include:

  • Critical reflections on the process of EAP materials design and development for a particular cohort, context, or learning and assessment objective;
  • Evaluations of the effectiveness or impact of EAP materials;
  • Reports or recounts of progress or findings of current or recently completed research projects on an aspect of EAP materials design;
  • Provocative challenges to (perceived) orthodoxies in EAP materials;
  • Arguments for new directions in the design of EAP materials;
  • Sharing of best practice for the integration of learning or other technologies into EAP materials design;
  • Approaches and strategies to collaboration with or inclusion of students or content and subject specialists in EAP materials design and development;
  • Critical comparisons of EAP materials design in two or more contexts;
  • Historical perspectives on the evolution of materials design for
