Job summary

Well-qualified and experienced EAP teachers are required for the Centre for Academic English’s 6-week and 3-week Presessional courses. These courses are uniquely STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine) and Blackboard-based. Teachers will prepare and teach classes on general academic literacy as well as discipline-specific language and discourse, and engage students in a number of STEM-related activities which exploit current Imperial research and involve Imperial researchers. Note that these courses are increasingly managed online with a paperless timetable, online student journals, online assessments and student coaching.

Duties and responsibilities

You will:
•Prepare for and teach mainly postgraduate Pre-sessional students for approximately 20 contact hours per week
•Prepare and teach general academic skills classes and discipline-specific language and discourse workshops that meet the needs of STEM students
•Use the VLE platform to manage online content
•Evaluate students’ formative oral and written work, monitor progress, and provide clear, detailed, timely and effective feedback
•Mark summative tests and assessment tasks and participate in regular standardisation meetings
•Place students at the beginning of the course and write end of course student reports
•Act as a coach to students and organise one-to-one meetings to discuss individual language progress and difficulties
•Participate in course induction, staff meetings and end of course debrief, and attend occasional social events that form part of the course
•Perform administrative duties required by the course such as completing work records and attendance registers
•Liaise regularly and collaborate with colleagues, and report any areas of concern to the CfAE Director or Pre-sessional Course Director
•Be available during the working day (when not teaching) for the full duration of the course

Essential requirements

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
•Applicants should have a first degree, DELTA (or equivalent) and/or a postgraduate degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL/EAP or other relevant area and preferably some experience of teaching EAP/ESAP in higher education. We will also consider applicants with an MSc in a relevant STEM subject with a minimum CELTA teaching qualification (or equivalent) and some EAP experience.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

•Applicants must be competent and confident in their use of ICT and experience of working with a VLE is essential.
•Experience of materials development, teaching and assessment of ELT and/or EAP students at a range of levels in higher education contexts or similar in the UK or abroad
•Knowledge of key theories and good practice in ELT and/or EAP language learning, teaching, assessment, and course and materials design
•Experience of supporting independent learning in and outside the classroom
•Experience of Pre-sessional teaching, ESAP (STEM) an advantage

•Articulate, effective and highly competent communicator in speech and writing
•IT/AV competent, and confident in using a range of IT/AV equipment in the classroom
•Ability and willingness to engage with complex material from a range of STEM disciplines
•Ability to use initiative to adapt and develop teaching effectively for this context
•Ability to engage enthusiasm, communicate complex information, and meet the needs of STEM postgraduate students
•Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to share ideas and materials
•Excellent personal organisation, administrative skills and time management
•Positive and professional attitude towards, and communication with, colleagues and students
•Awareness of, and sensitivity to, diversity in the workplace

Job Salary & Benefits

Salary: £34,720 – £42,830 (pro rata incl holiday pay)

3 week course: Mon 3rd September – Fri 21st September 2018 (incl tutor induction Fri 31st Aug)
