Formally established in June 2022, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)(HKUST(GZ)) is a cooperatively-run higher education institution between the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

College of Education Sciences (CES), under Vice-President for Teaching and Learning, is the academic unit responsible for first- and second-year undergraduate education, offering humanities, social sciences, language and STEM courses. 

PLE is the academic unit implementing the language policy of the University to build a multi-lingual and multi-cultural community of learning and practice among faculty, staff and students – both undergraduate and postgraduate. To achieve this, it offers language-related credit and non-credit bearing courses, events and activities.

Major responsibilities include but are not limited to:

The appointees are expected to teach a range of courses in English proficiency, English for academic purposes (EAP) and communication skills for postgraduate and undergraduate students. The appointees also need to help develop course materials, give lectures with associated preparation and assessment, engage in professional/scholarly activities, participate in the University’s activities and administration, and contribute to campus English use in all forms. 

Qualification of Candidates

Applicants with a PhD or Master’s degree in relevant disciplines, a recognized teaching qualification and relevant teaching experience are preferred. Applicants with experience in the following areas would be particularly welcome:

  • Development of English language curriculum and courses for undergraduates.
  • Rich experience in teaching Chinese students both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Writing and presentation skills in research as a practitioner, preferably in scientific and technological topics.
  • Experience/commitment to using innovative teaching methodology.
  • Designing teaching materials and teaching high-level proficiency and EAP courses.
  • Teaching pronunciation, perhaps with drama or speech therapy experience.
  • Associate/Assistant Professor of Education: A PhD degree in the English Language Education or any other related fields with at least 4 years teaching/research or related experiences after PhD graduation in English Language Education in higher education sector (experiences in interdisciplinary teaching are preferable).
  • Senior Lecturer, Lecturer I, Lecturer II: at least a MSc/MPhil degree in the English Language Education or any other related fields; at least 4 years for Lecturer I and 6 years for Senior Lecturer teaching or research experiences in English Language Education (experiences in interdisciplinary teaching are preferable).

Job Salary & Benefits

Salary is highly competitive of international standard and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment to non-substantiation track faculty will be made on a fixed-term contract of up to 3 years renewable for another 3 years subject to performance and mutual agreement.
