The International Medical Foundation programme is being introduced in 2023. It is planned mainly for international students of high potential who wish to study a medical degree. The programme will support students to develop a foundation of knowledge and develop the confidence that will enable them to realise their potential to study medicine.
The Northumbria University Language School Study Skills programme provides first year undergraduate students with the language and other academic skills necessary for them to fulfil all the requirements within their various undergraduate degrees.
Northumbria University is looking to appoint an External Examiner for the English modules listed below:
• EF3050 English for Medical Science
• EF3051 Academic communication and professional development skills
• EF3039 Listening and Seminar Skills for Academic Purposes
• EF3040 Reading, Writing and Research Skills for Academic Purposes
• EF3041 Intercultural Communication Skills for Academic Purposes
The successful candidate will be expected to fulfil varied commitments (e.g. moderation and standardisation) across multiple student intakes over the entire academic year.
Essential Requirements:
• Suitable qualifications (academically or professionally) with expertise in either English for Academic Purposes or the subject area of Linguistics, English language testing, and IELTS
• Experience of and leadership in learning and teaching / quality assurance
• Experience of assessment development
• Active participation in a recognised professional body (e.g. British Council; Cambridge English; BALEAP, etc.) or has published research
Desirable Requirements:
• Knowledge and experience of TNE
• Previous experience in teaching and/or assessing IELTS
• External examiner experience within the past 5 years, including participation in recognised development programme/training
As subject External Examiner, you will be involved in the approval of assessments, moderation of student work, completion of annual monitoring reports and may be invited to attend examination boards.

• For degree / higher apprenticeship programmes – please ensure your relevant occupational experience and professional body registrations are evident;
• A covering paragraph outlining your suitability, to include indication of any association between yourself and the Northumbria Department. Maximum 500 words, to be incorporated and not as a separate document.
